Keep your plants well-watered even when you’re away for a long time using a simple, efficient method. Plant lovers know regular watering is crucial for their plants’ health and growth. While asking someone to water your plants is common, there’s a DIY method that lets your plants self-water.
DIY Self-Watering System:
- Gather two plastic bottles, one larger than the other. Cut the bottom off the larger bottle, about six centimeters from the base.
- Place the smaller bottle inside the cut end of the larger one. Mark the maximum water level on the smaller bottle, aligning it with the lower edge of the larger bottle.
- Below this line, draw a small square with a different-colored marker and cut out this section to create a water release window.
- Take a 35 cm long fabric strip, place it on aluminum foil, and wrap it, leaving 4 cm of fabric exposed.
- Fold this wrapped piece and place it in the bottom part of the larger bottle next to the smaller bottle.
Using the System:
- Bury the base of the larger bottle in the soil, about half a centimeter deep.
- Fill the smaller bottle with water. It will flow out through the window into the base, which acts as a reservoir.
- Insert the aluminum-wrapped fabric into the base to function as a sprinkler.
- Water droplets will start to appear, watering your plants.
Adjusting Water Flow:
- If the water flows too quickly, tighten the foil wrap to slow it down, ensuring a steady water supply.
This DIY drip irrigation system is perfect for both garden beds and pots. It’s a great way to keep your plants hydrated during long vacations without worry. Enjoy your time off knowing your plants are well taken care of.
